Delroy's Story (Biography)
Jamaican artist Delroy Haye was born on November 4th 1963 in the parish of St. Mary, Annotto Bay to father Sylvester Haye and mother Eugena Haye.
Delroy Haye, affectionately called “Billy” grew up in the parish of Portland, in a small district next door to the parish of St. Mary called Windsor Castle, where at the age of seven he started attending the Windsor Castle Primary and All-Age School.
After spending no more than a year at this school he left and started attending the Buff Bay Seventh Day Adventist School, where his love for art started. At the age of twelve he left this school, spent one term at the Kildare Secondary School and then went back to Windsor Castle Primary and all age school.
It was while at Windsor Castle All-Age School that Delroy developed a real love for art under the guidance of Vivian Grassett. Most of the art done at this school were craft items, that were sold to students and members of the community. Like most of his other schools he did not spend a long time at the Windsor Castle All Age school as by the age of thirteen it was on to Titchfield High School after passing the Grade Nine Achievement Test.
At Titchfield High School his love for drawing and painting started with much encouragement from his art teacher Miss Denise Reid and some strong competition between himself and fellow student Denis Reid ( no relationship to the art teacher)
After graduating from Titchfield High school in 1982, Delroy went to Edna Manley School of the Visual and Performing Arts were he majored in Graphics and Communication Design and minored in photography.
Although he did not do painting or drawing while at Edna Manley School of the Visual and Performing Arts, his love for drawing and painting was his passion. After graduating in 1987 He went to work at Moore Business Forms and then on to Sun Island T-shirts where he spent five years.
Delroy Haye has been teaching at Camperdown High school since 1996 where he has been the HOD for the Visual Arts departments from 2002 up until 2022. During this time he has entered the JCDC art festival on three occasions where he secured a bronze and a silver medal. He has also done a number of paintings for the government through Insports, for athletes such as: Usain Bolt, Shelly Ann Fraser Price, Asafa Powell and a number of other athletes.
